Under every coast redwood canopy is an intriguing and diverse assemblage of herbaceous plants adapted to life on the forest floor. Without the water storage capacity of redwoods, plants like the Western sword fern exhibit dynamic responses to fog and changing weather patterns. Tracking sword fern not only reveals many fascinating aspects of their poorly understood biology, but also provides insight into coast redwood forest water balance.
