Definitions and Examples

Face to face instruction is the classic mode of instruction where you meet in a designated university classroom on campus or instructional space, at a specific time throughout the semester. You are expected to attend class sessions in person, except for the first two weeks of instruction, when all classes will be online.

Virtual Synchronous Instruction

A course that is Virtual and Synchronous means that 100% of the course curriculum is delivered online, and in real time. You are expected to be available and attend the times indicated on the class schedule and access to the internet is required.

Example: COMM 100 (3 units) meets in real-time twice per week via Zoom for 75 minutes.

Virtual Asynchronous Instruction

100% of the course instruction is delivered in an asynchronous online format (no real-time meetings) with students completing coursework on their own time but with scheduled due dates.

Example: No real-time class meetings, learning that is typically determined by class expectations and/or due dates in Canvas (e.g., assignments, activities, etc.)

Hybrid Instruction

Hybrid with a student-rotation model and potential virtual components that are not bound by real-time class meetings. Students will be divided into two groups and rotate between participating in real-time virtual class meetings and real-time physical classroom participation to ensure physical distancing requirements are met. In addition, virtual components may include participation in coursework that is not bound by real-time meetings, such as activities in Canvas.

Here are two examples:

• Example 1: ART 100 (3 units) meets twice a week in a physical classroom for 50 minutes each and in real-time via Zoom with student groups rotating between physical classroom and in real-time via Zoom, remainder is asynchronous in Canvas (e.g., assignments, activities, etc.)
• Example 2: ART 100 (3 units) meets once per week in a physical classroom for 50 minutes and in Zoom with student groups rotating between physical and Zoom, remainder is asynchronous in Canvas (e.g., assignments, activities, etc.)

Flexible Hybrid/HyFlex

A Flexible Hybrid/HyFlex course allows you the option to attend sessions on campus, in the classroom, participate virtually, or both. You can change your mode of attendance weekly or by topic, according to need or preference.
