Virtual Roundtable: CA College/University Basic Needs: Context, Data, and Effective Models

As part of the 2017-2018 NASPA Region VI NorCal Meaningful Conversations Virtual Roundtable series, this one-hour interactive session will be focused on CA College/University Basic Needs: Context, Data, and Effective Models.

Region VI NorCal Advisory Board Member Mira Friedman (Health Educator, Cal Poly Humboldt) and NASPA Region VI Nor-Cal Executive Co-Chair Dr. Brian Mistler (Executive Director, Student Health & Wellbeing Services, Cal Poly Humboldt) host three top leaders from the Community College, California State University, and University of California sister systems as they lead our conversation with the aim of deepening our understanding of the factors that produce hunger and homelessness, data on student basic needs, and effective strategies from each sister system.

Presenter Bios:

Ruben E. Canedo: serves dual roles in the Basic Needs world. At the campus level, Ruben serves as Chair of the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee. At the UC system level, Ruben serves as the Co-Chair of the UC System Basic Needs Committee. Ruben is an alumnus of UC Berkeley with degrees in Ethnic Studies and Social Welfare. His graduate research focused on intersectionality, higher education policy, holistic equity services, and the politics of leadership decision-making. Fun fact: Ruben holds a 3rd degree black belt and was raised in a traditional Okinawan Karate-Do family.

Ravin Craig is the Health Educator for Cal Poly Humboldt (HSU). Humboldt is located in northern California and is a part of the California State University System. Ravin has a Bachelor's in Political Science and Multicultural Queer Studies, she also has a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with a focus on college community health communication. Ravin runs Humboldt's on campus food pantry Oh SNAP Student Food Programs and the Humboldt Peer Health Education Program. She has a passion for food sovereignty and justice minded health education.

Chad Thompson, M.B.A., serves as the Interim Director of SparkPoint and Career Services here at Skyline College. He has a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Film Studies from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA from the Peter F. Drucker & Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. He has taught Macroeconomics at Merritt College in Oakland, and has been Program Coordinator for the ATLAS Program (a vocational training program) at College of Alameda. More recently, he led the development, implementation of the LISC-funded Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) at Merritt College, for which he served as Program Director and Financial Coach. Chad has a passion for financial literacy and student success. He believes that everyone, especially community college students, should have access to free, high-quality financial education and support services so that they can succeed, share knowledge and create positive change in their community.
