About the Annual CSU Symposium on Teaching and Learning

The CSU Symposium champions the advancement of educator and student success. The Symposium facilitates the discussion of innovative ideas and the exploration of the best learning practices. Peer-reviewed presentations are the highlight of the Symposium and focus on ways to enable excellent teaching leading to student success. Different CSU campuses have the privilege to host the Symposium. CSU Fullerton is honored to host the CSU Symposium this year. The Symposium is generously supported by the CSU System-wide Faculty Development Council and the Institute for Teaching and Learning at the Chancellor’s Office.

About this year’s Symposium theme, IDEAS

This year’s theme for the CSU Symposium on Teaching and Learning is IDEAS: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Student Success. This theme provides an opportunity for participants to explore topics crucial to the success of higher education. As educators, it is imperative that we continually acknowledge the valuable life experiences that all learners, including ourselves, bring to our educational environment. The purpose of the symposium is to challenge our biases, affirm our commitment to current best practices in inclusive pedagogy, acknowledge the achievements of our peers, encourage one another, and recharge ourselves as educators. Please join us as we celebrate what faculty are doing and explore ways that we can improve education for the next generation.

The keynote speaker for the symposium on March 13 is Deborah Santiago, COO of Excelencia in Education, who will address ways for minority-enrolling institutions to become institutions that truly serve minoritized students.

There will be two pre-symposium workshops from 9:00 am – Noon on Friday, March 13. There is no additional fee to attend a workshop, but space is limited:

  • An Introduction to Inquiry-Based Learning
  • Supporting Disciplinary Learning through Deeper Reading and Metacognitive Conversation

New this year is a series of five virtual sessions, from 8:15 am-11:45 am on Friday, March 13. These sessions feature presentations on immersive and virtual reality, teaching and learning for social justice, and a sneak peek at an online teaching essentials course.

  • Attend these sessions from the office, from home, or while at the symposium.
  • The sessions are offered free!
  • Those not attending the symposium in Fullerton should register, and select “virtual only.”

The symposium features presentations by California State University and California Community College faculty related to empowering first-generation students; supporting students in first-year writing, math, and quantitative reasoning; equity, inclusion, accessibility and strength-based pedagogies; assessment for improvement; technology, innovation, and online and blended learning; and the incorporation of mindfulness and wellness.

Please join us to celebrate innovative IDEAS for teaching the next generation of Californians.

Registration for the Symposium on March 13 and 14 is $50 and includes continental breakfast and lunch on both Friday and Saturday, and an afternoon reception on Friday.
