Zoom Recording Migration to Panopto

Cal Poly Humboldt will be migrating meetings recorded in Zoom to Panopto this month. Panopto is a video content management system utilized by many universities and businesses. ITS and the CTL are coordinating this migration.  Future Zoom recording will be automatically uploaded and saved to Panopto, where you can view, edit, and share your work if desired. The reason for this migration is that we have too much data stored in Zoom. We need to begin prioritizing those Zoom recordings that will be saved and delete those that are not needed.

Please, delete your own files or migrate them to Panopto - download from Zoom and easily upload to Panopto

Some helpful tips to consider:

You will find archived recordings in your Panopto "Meeting Recordings" folder. All Zoom sessions automatically export to Panopto via the Zoom/Panopto integration starting Jan 2022. Campus users can opt-out of automatic exports in personal Panopto settings.

Send a note to mew11@humboldt.edu for support.

Consider the following:

  • Do you have Zoom recordings that you will use again like lectures?  If yes, then keep.  If no, then delete.

  • Do you have Zoom recordings that contain important historical information? If yes, then keep. If no, then delete.

  • Do you have Zoom recordings that contain sensitive meeting information?  If yes, then keep. If no, then delete.

  • Do you have Zoom recordings that you have not used in the past year? If not, then keep. If yes, then delete.

Now is the time to delete recordings to meet the data storage goals by 6/1/2022. All users will be receiving regular communications and updates on this process, and ITS and the CTL are here to help.

Why use Panopto?

Connecting with students in substantive ways is continually part of being a critically reflective practitioner. Teaching and learning technologies offer solid platforms to connect and engage with students, offering meaningful content in video/text format. Panopto is one of those.

We think you will find this tool to have considerable advantages. Highly regarded in higher education, we will work with you to explore Panopto at Cal Poly Humboldt. Developed at Carnegie Mellon University, Panopto is a lecture capture and video management system. Panopto is available for Cal Poly Humboldt users to create, view and stream video content in a searchable database. Panopto Media Library

In an effort to simplify and streamline video sharing within Cal Poly Humboldt, the Google Media Library will become integrated into Panopto. None of the existing video links will change, but when you click on the video link, you will now watch the movie in the Panopto viewer. This semester we will be changing the url to each video, therefore as we work through this process, some might be viewed through Google, while others will be viewed through the Panopto player. At the completion of this conversion you will be able to access the entire video library through Panopto. During this process you can continue to share the videos from the Canvas Media Library or the Google Media Library without interruption.
